Overview

Recently, I decided to take a stab at learning how to create Flash content and learning how to program in Actionscript. For my first full blown experiment, I decided to take a stab and programming a dippy game in Flash. The result was Bumpkin's Dippy Math Game.

The game idea is based on a 1991 Japanese arcade game. I found the game for Mame (the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator) and have enjoy many hours playing it. There are a few differences between the arcade version and my version however. The big difference is, in my game you don't get low quality black and white blurry porn for doing good (you did in the arcade version). There are a few other minor differences as well, but all were added to make game play more enjoyable.

I think you'll find the game is fairly self explanatory. So, if you want to just jump in and give it a try, click on the Play Now button. Fair warning though, it is addictive. If you'd like to find out more, read on...

How To Play

The goal of the game is to create target numbers by adding and subtracting a random series of numbered chips. To add numbers to the total, you simply direct them into the correct chute based on color. If you put a number in the wrong chute, that number is subtracted from the total.

Each chute will hold 5 chips. If you try to send the 6th chip into a chute (assuming it's not a bomb) the game is over. A bomb will empty a chute, but does not change the total. If there is a way to use the four known chips (one in play, three in the hopper) to create the target number, a bell will sound and the red light will turn green. It is up to you to figure out how to use the numbers to create the target. Remember, the solution will not always be adding all the numbers, sometimes you will have to add some numbers and subtract others.

Once the total equals the target number, all chutes are cleared and you move to the next level. Each level gets a little harder. The chips move a little faster, and the target numbers get higher (sometimes). The ultimate goal is to get to the highest level you can reach.

Scoring

Putting a chip in the correct chute = 50 points (50 * Level in hard mode)
Putting a chip in the wrong chute = -50 points
Completing a level = 1000 points * Level
