Overview

OK, this one is not really a game. There is no scoring. It's more of just a fun way to waste some time and make some pretty pictures. It's also a good way to visualize rotational geometry. It you hit on a pattern you like, you can save it to the Presets for all the world to see.

Here are the basics. You've got three arms. Each arm has a length, rotation speed, and rotation direction. By fiddling with the sliders and buttons, you can make changes to these parameters. When you have what you want, click Run and the program will draw a pattern. Or, you can click on Random to get a random pattern. Or, you can click on Presets and select one of the patterns other people have saved.

A few tips...

  • Whole numbers in rotation speed generate the simplest or most sparse patterns. These are the ones which are fastest to draw.
  • Fractional numbers generate more intricate or most dense patterns. But, these take a while to draw.
  • Long arm lengths combined with fast rotation speeds produce choppy patterns with straight lines instead of smooth curves.
  • To get the more classic Spirograph patterns, set two adjacent arms to the same rotation speed and direction then vary the third.
  • You can overlay patterns by changing only the direction of the arms. But, only the overlayed pattern is saved in Presets.
  • To increase symmetry, set the rotation speeds to multiples of each other (i.e. 1.5 3 14).
  • Good patterns can also be had by letting the third speed be the product, sum, or difference of the first two speeds.

There are literally thousands of really nice patterns to be made. However, I'm not sure how the program would handle thousands of presets. So, as a general rule, I only save patterns that suggest a name to me. Since you have to give a name for each preset, I would encourage you to do the same.

Enjoy!
